Tutoring FAQ:
What is the tutoring like?
I work with students and adults in a very relaxed
and
comfortable setting. I am totally flexible,
accommodating
to your needs and preferences.
If you simply want
homework help, I provide that.
If you want me to decide
what you need, create
assignments, and manage
progress, I do that.
Some adults come to me for writing
assistance for personal or business purposes.
Each
client is different.
Would you come tutor in our home?
I may be able to do that if you are near The
Shoppes
at Grand Prairie, or if you are in a
location that allows
me
to arrange my schedule
accordingly.
What materials would we need?
If you simply want homework help, just bring your
textbook, paper, and pencil. Otherwise, I have a large
supply of texts and other teaching materials. I some-
times recommend the purchase of a
book, but if
finances are an issue, we can work
around that.
In your blog, you write about “character” as
necessary for success. What do you mean by that?
Character is not a broad judgment about the
goodness
of a person. Rather, it’s the sum total
of the decisions,
attitudes, and behaviors of an
individual. Until you sit
and work with a student,
you may not realize just how
much character
comes into play. I believe it’s much
more important
than intelligence! One author, Dr.
Michael E.
Bernard, calls these traits “habits of the
mind.”
I
like that phrase because we want our students
to
form
good habits in what they think, how they
handle
boredom,
frustration, or disappointment,
and so on.
Each tiny,
split-second decision
contributes to character.
With
warmth,
encouragement, and careful attention,
I work
with
students to check those habitual thoughts
and
behaviors, and help them to build stronger
character
just as a personal trainer helps build
stronger muscles.
Can I afford the tutoring?
If you can afford to pay the typical cost of piano
lessons,
you can afford my tutoring, and as
important as music is,
I believe your student’s
academic progress and character
development
are even more important. When finances
are a
problem, we can consider forming a group to
reduce the cost to each individual. I also offer
need-
based scholarships upon proof of family
income.
